PROCESS OF LANGUAGE ACQUISITION:
Speech perception, word segmentation, preparing for production, first words, putting words together, conversational skills, lateral developement
speech perception:
child learning that speech exists
prosody:
rhythm and pitch of a language, child learns this from womb
Catagorical perception:
grouping sounds into categories
word segmentation:
learning that sounds joined make words
stress patterning:
first syllable in word emphasized
Distributional properties of speech:
different sounds typically go together
preparing for production:
Cooing, sigh, smack lips, click tongues, squeal, babbling
word recognition:
able to tell words by first syllables
word production:
usually family members, pets, important objects, modifiers (mine, hot, all gone)
common mistakes:
leave out hard parts, replace hard to say with easy, reorder parts of work, overextension (all 4 leg animal is dog), Underextension (only my cat is a cat all other cats aren’t cats)
-telegraphic speech:
short grouped words (“mom eat” “read me”)
conversational skills:
more developed speech
private speech
