What is emotion:
combination of bodily (physiological) and cognitive responses to thoughts and experiences
Discrete emotions theory:
(nature) belief that each emotion has a set of responses, used to survive, innate because young infants have the same responses to similar emotions
Functionalism:
(nurture) emotions used to influence environment,
Self-conscious emotions:
requires self awareness -guilt, shame, embarrassment, pride, jealousy-
Social referencing:
child uses caregivers facial expressions or vocal cues to decide how to deal with situations.
Display rules:
appropriate emotions for situations (funerals, boys don’t cry) used for protection of others or self-protection
Temperament:
emotion + activity level + attention
Goodness-of-fit:
compatibility of your temperament and your environment
Differential susceptibility:
childs temperament can put them at risk of negative or positive outcomes
Multifinality:
one risk factor can lead to multiple outcomes (end of things)
Equifinality:
the beginning of things
