Landry & Bartling (2011) (Cognitive) Flashcards
1
Q
Researchers and year
A
Landry and Bartling 2011
2
Q
Aim
A
Investigate if articulatory suppression would influence recall of written list of phonologically dissimilar letters in serial recall
3
Q
Sample
A
34 undergraduate psychology students
4
Q
Procedure
A
- Participants randomly allocated into two groups:
Control group (no articulatory suppression)
Experimental group (Performed the task with articulatory suppression) - Each participant was tested individually
- Asked to recall 10 sets of 7 phonologically dissimilar letters
- These sets were shown to both groups one at a time, with a 5 second view time for each set, 5 second wait, and then writing down the set as best as they could remember on an answer sheet with seven blanks.
5
Q
What was the articulatory suppression task?
A
Repeatedly saying the numbers 1 and 2 at a rate of 2 numbers per second
6
Q
Results
A
Mean percent of accurate recall in the control group was 76%, much higher than the 45% mean in the experimental group with articulatory suppression.
7
Q
Research Method
A
True experiment
8
Q
Evaluation
A
Strengths:
- Well controlled study with high level of internal validity
Limitations:
- Artificial (Lacks ecological validity)
