Landing gear, tyres and brakes Flashcards
Two types of landing gears
Tricycle, tailwheel
Wheels are attached the structure in one of the forms:
- Spring leaf
- Struts and braces
- Oleo-pneumatic unit
THe oleo-pneumatic unit consists of
A piston moving through a cylinder
oleo-strut
Uses oil “damping agent” to prevent execssive telescoping movements and to damp its rebound action
Torque link
the > metal shaped aligning the nose wheel correctly. hinged
Castoring nosewheels
Wheels that move freely and aren’t controlled. to Steer on the ground, you need to use rudder
Nosewheel shimmy
Oleo-penutmetic nosewheels are pronse to shimmy, changing vibrations caused by the nosewheel oscilliating a few degreers either side of the centre on the gorund
Creep
Slight movement of the tire relative to the wheel
Hydraulics components are
Reservoir, pump (hand, electric or engine driven), a ilter, selector valve to control direction, relief valve to relieve excess pressure, and an actuator or servo
Servo / actuator
cylinder with a piston inside which turns fluid power into work
Airplane brakes are
- differntial
- using disc brakes with huydraluic
The brake disc is part of the
wheel and rotates with it
When pressing the brake,
the brake pads tigheten the brake disc
