Case study: Makoko floating school 2014
-Designed to address problems in Lagos related to growing population, rising sea levels, poor water and power supply.
-Schools designed with solar panels, natural ventilation, floating platforms, local building materials and rainwater harvesting.
-Planned to apply this design to houses in the Lagoon- however school collapsed in 2016 following heavy rain.
Issues with managing squatter settlements
-60% Lagos live in slums; Makoko slum- anywhere from 85,000 to 250,000 people
-Lack basic facilities, communal toilets, waste put into lagoon causing diseases such as typhoid and cholera.
Issues with managing waste/environment
-Only 40% waste collected
-Fatal accident rate in Olyssun dump of 28 per 100,000 (3x HICs)
-Air pollution 5x recommended level
