Q

How is tourism sustainably managed in Antarctica? (IAATO)

A

The IAATO promotes safe and environmentally friendly tourism in Antarctica, by limited numbers taken onshore (50 per boat), conservation talks and not leaving waste behind. This means that 95% landing sites are not damaged and scientific research shows that penguins are not currently affected by tourism, so tourism is being sustainably managed at present.

Q

Overfishing in Antarctica

A

The Antarctic common is subject to overfishing, despite interventions from organisations such as ASOC. Particularly the southern ocean for krill’s and Antarctic rock cod. Illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing continues, Antarctica is not being used sustainability by all resulting in fisheries closing down as a result, for example the marbled cod fishery.

Marine pollution as a threat from tourist ships

A

In 2007, cruise ship MS Explorer hit an iceberg and sank off the South Shetland Islands in the Southern Ocean, as well as Ocean pollution oil shills from the ships. Sources suggest that Antarctica is being used as a ‘playground’ for the rich.
