Lacrimal System Innervation and Blood Supply (M1) Flashcards
CN V
Trigeminal nerve.
sensory innervation of the lacrimal gland.
V1 - ophthalmic nerve
Lacrimal nerve
parasympathetic fibers
motor innervation of lacrimal gland.
glands = involuntary = autonomic = parasympathetic
CN VII
facial nerve.
motor innervation of horner’s muscle
temporal and zygomatic branches innervate orbicularis muscle
what arteries supply nasolacrimal apparatus
angular, infraorbital, and dorsonasal
what artery supplies lacrimal gland
lacrimal artery
course of the lacrimal artery
- Branches from ophthalmic artery after entering orbit
- Courses anteriorly, along upper border of lateral rectus
- Supplies lacrimal gland
- Pierces orbital septum to enter UL and LL as lateral palpebral arteries
course of the medial palpebral arteries
- Branch from ophthalmic artery after it enters orbit
- Pierce orbital septum to enter UL and LL
- Anastomose with lateral palpebral arteries to form palpebral arcades (marginal and peripheral).
marginal palpebral arcade location and supply
anterior to tarsal plate.
supplies the UL and LL when eyelids are protracted.
supplies the cornea when eyelids are protracted.
peripheral palpebral arcade location and supply
anterior to tarsal (Mullers) muscle.
supplies UL and LL near peripheral edge of tarsal plate.
dorsonasal artery course
Terminal branch of ophthalmic artery
1. Courses near medial wall of the orbit
2. Pierces orbital septum
3. Travels alongside nose and anastomoses with angular artery
4. Supplies nasolacrimal apparatus and nose
