Conjunctiva - Regions (M2) Flashcards
what does mucus contain
mucin
water
epithelial cells
dead leukocytes
inorganic salts
what is the function of mucus
lubrication and protection of ocular surface
3 regions of conjunctiva and what do they form
Form conjunctival sac.
- Palpebral conjunctiva
- Forniceal conjunctiva
- Bulbar conjunctiva
location of palpebral conjunctiva
lines underside of eyelids
regions of palpebral conjunctiva
marginal conjunctiva
tarsal conjunctiva
orbital conjunctiva
location of marginal conjunctiva
present at eyelid margin.
forms mucocutaneous junction.
contains lid wiper region.
location of tarsal conjunctiva
present in area of tarsal plate –> firmly adherent to tarsal plate which provides smooth tarsal surface
location of orbital conjunctiva
present of edge of tarsal plate to the forniceal conjunctiva.
loose tissue that allows for free movement of the globe.
function and location of forniceal conjunctiva
aka conjunctival fornix.
cul de sac that connects palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva.
- deepest laterally, extending posterior to the equator of the globe.
- not present medially (plica and caruncle present medially instead).
loose tissue that allows for free movement of globe
function and location of bulbar conjunctiva
lines the anterior globe - covers anterior tenon’s capsule/sclera and eom insertions.
merges with tenon’s capsule and anterior sclera within 3 mm of cornea –> layers become continuous with cornea
what are the 2 specialized areas of bulbar conjunctiva medially
plica semilunaris.
caruncle.
location and function of plica semilunaris
cresent-shaped fold of bulbar conjunctiva.
allows full lateral movement of the eye without the tissue stretching.
makes up the floor of the lacrimal lake (tear reservoir).
contains high conc. of goblet cells.
location and function of caruncle
mound of bulbar conjunctiva/skin:
- conjunctival elements: non-keratinzed epithelial cells, goblet cells, accessory lacrimal glands.
- skin elements: hair follicles, sebaceous glands, sweat glands.
overlies medial edge of plica.
function is poorly understood - hairs trap oil, mucus, debris
