Arteries (M1) Flashcards
external carotid artery function
supply blood to face and neck
6 branches of the external carotid artery
- superior thyroid artery
- ascending pharyngeal artery
- lingual artery
- facial arty
- occipital arty
- posterior auricular artery
2 terminal branches of the external carotid artery
- maxillary branch
- superficial temporal artery
facial artery location
starts at lower jaw area and goes up side of mouth towards nose.
anastamoses with dorsonasal artery
what does the angular branch of the facial artery supply
medial portion of LL and nasolacrimal apparatus
location of maxillary branch of external carotid artery
branches off external carotid artery.
infraorbital branch supplies LL and nasolacrimal apparatus
internal carotid artery function
supply blood to most of anterior portion of the cerebrum
4 sections of internal carotid artery
- cervical: runs up in the neck
- petrous: enters skull through carotid canal, ascends short distance, curves anteriorly and medially
- cavernous: enters cavernous sinus, goes forward along medial wall beside sphenoid bone, exits roof of sinus b/t CNII and CNIII
- cerebral: exits cavernous sinus and gives off terminal cerebral branches
10 branches of internal carotid artery
- caroticotympatic artery
- vidian artery
- meningohypophyseal trunk
- inferolateral trunk
- ophthalmic artery
- superior hypophyseal artery
- posterior communicating artery
- anterior choroidal artery
- anterior cerebral artery (terminal branch)
- middle cerebral artery (terminal branch)
ophthalmic artery function
main blood supply to globe and adnexa
*first major branch off cerebral portion of internal carotid artery
ophthalmic artery course
travels anteriorly ->
enters orbit via optic canal within dural sheath of ON ->
emerges from dural sheath of ON ->
courses inferolateral to the ON ->
crosses above or below ON ->
travels medially ->
travels anteriorly b/t MR and SO to give off terminal branches
9 branches of ophthalmic artery
- lacrimal artery
- medial palpebral arteries (2)
- muscular arteries (2)
- ciliary arteries (2)
- central retinal artery
- ethmoid arteries (2)
- supraorbital artery
- supratrochlear artery (terminal branch)
9 dorsonasal artery (terminal branch)
lacrimal artery course
enters orbit ->
branches from ophthalmic artery ->
courses anteriorly along upper border of lateral rectus ->
supplies lacrimal gland ->
pierces orbital septum ->
enter UL&LL as lateral palpebral arteries ->
anastomose w/ medial palpebral arteries ->
form palpebral arcades ->
supply eyelids and palpebral & forniceal conjunctiva
medial palpebral arteries course
enter orbit ->
branch from ophthalmic artery ->
pierce orbital septum ->
enter UL&LL ->
anastomose w/ lateral palpebral arteries ->
form palpebral arcades
marginal palpebral arcade location and function
location: anterior to tarsal plate
function: supply UL&LL near eyelid margin; supply cornea when eyelids are protracted (closed)
