Q

What is the baird-parker agar used for?

A

This media is developed from the tellurite-glycine formulation and improved its reliability in isolating Staphylococcus aureus from foods. Baird-Parker has added sodium pyruvate, to protect damaged cells and aid their recovery and egg yolk emulsion as a diagnostic agent. It is now widely recommended by national and international bodies for the isolation of Staphylococcus aureus

Q

What is the sabouraud dextrose agar used for?

A

An acidic pH medium for the isolation of dermatophytes, fungi, and yeasts. This modification of Sabouraud agar is suitable for the cultivation and differentiation of fungi.

Q

what is the HDD agar used for?

A

Homofermentatative-Heterofermentative Differential (HHD) agar: Lactic Bacteria Differential Agar is formulated for differentiation of homofermentative lactobacilli and heterofermentative streptococc. Homofermetative LAB are able to produce lactic acid from the sugar in the media and lower the pH of the media turning the area around the colony yellow. Heterofermentative LAB produce acid to a lesser extent and turn form bluish-green colonies.

Q

why is there an antibiotic in teh OGYE agar ?

A

to select only for the yeasst and molds because pH is neutral and without antibiotic you would have bacteria.
also it stresses the yeast and can give higher counts

Q

what is the Acidified Potato Dextrose Agar (APDA) used for?

A

for th eisolation and enumeration of yeast and molds in dairy products. it has low pH because of tartic acid and so it inhibits the bacterial growth
