Lab studies and behavioural economics Flashcards
What is generosity?
showing a readiness to give an amount of something, especially money, that is more than strictly necessary or expected
What happens in a classic dictator game and what are the results?
- dictator gets money, recipient gets nothing
- dictator can choose to give recipient money
- people actually give money, despite no personal benefit
How did Wang and Navarro-Martinez (2023) modify the dictator game to change context in different conditions? (4)
- 1 = classic
- 2 = told recipient is a charity
- 3 = charity and used money earned in previous game
- 4 = charity, earned money and face to face
In Wang and Navarro-Martinez’s (2023) study, how did the standard dictator game relate to charity donations?
amount in the game correlated significantly with amount given to charity
In Wang and Navarro-Martinez’s (2023) study, which change increased the relationship between dictator game giving and charity donations?
having acquired the money by earning it
In Wang and Navarro-Martinez’s (2023) study, which change didn’t change the relationship between dictator game giving and charity donations?
who you were giving to in the game
How did dictator game scores relate to who gave money back sent in the wrong address? (3)
- gave nothing in the game = 50% returned
- gave something in game = 72% returned
- correlation between generosity in the game and giving in real life
What happens in the trust game?
truster gets money and can give any amount to the recipient (the amount gets multiplied)
the recipient can then give any amount back
What happened in the trust game when participants were told how much was given back by the recipient each round (compared to not knowing)? (3)
- more accurate at guessing how many returned money
- shared more with recipients
- earned more than those who didn’t know
How can injunctive norms be measured with the trust game?
add in a punisher who can punish the recipient for not giving enough money back
What happens when you add a punisher into the trust game? (2)
- punisher = more giving back by the recipient
- also more giving by truster, even though they couldn’t be punished
