Lab: Icterus Index Flashcards
Who is the author of icterus index
Meulengracht (Hilado, 1996)
Objective of the icterus index
To learn the method and technical of determining serum icterus index.
Dilution factor
1:10
Principle
The intensity of the golden yellow color imparted to the serum by bilirubin is measured by comparing the serum color with the color of the standard solution.
Standard solution
Potassium dichromate
Blank
Distilled water
One unit of II has been defined as the color of a ________ solution to potassium dichromate
1:10,000
Buffer solution
Phosphate buffer solution
Ph of phosphate buffer solution
7.4
Wavelength
415 nm
If the reading is high, transfer to ___ of the mixture to another test tube and dilute to ___ with ____.
1 ml
10 with distilled water
It is essential that the serum for the II determination is absolutely free of visible
Hemolysis and chyle
The patient should not eat food items which contain yellow pigment for _____ hours prior to the drawing of blood for the test.
14-48 hrs
Normal values
4-6 units
Preparation of reagents:
Standard stock solution
- Dissolve 1 gm of potassium dichromate in 90 ml of distilled water.
- Add 0.1 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid and dilute to 100 ml.
- Keep in brown bottle.
