Lab Exercise #6: Mitosis Flashcards
What part of the cell cycle is the longest in time?
Interphase (divided into G1, S, and G2 phases)
During which part of the cell cycle does replication occur?
S Phase - DNA synthesis takes place and the chromosomes are replicated in preparation for division
G2 Phase - Replication of organelles
The division of nuclear content is called?
Mitosis
The division of cytoplasm and organelles is called?
Cytokinesis
Interphase
Longest portion of cell cycle, when the cell is not dividing; divided into G1 phase, S phase, and G2 phase
G1 Phase
First stage of Interphase.
Cell grows in size and various cytoplasmic organelles are replicated (NORMAL ACTIVITY)
S Phase
DNA synthesis takes place and the chromosomes are replicated in preparation for division (DNA COPIED)
G2 Phase
Involves a continuation of cell growth and replication of organelles (ORGANELLES COPIED)
Prophase
Chromatin condenses to form visible chromosomes; spindle forms; nuclear envelope and nucleoli disappears
First stage of Mitosis and longest stage
Metaphase
Chromosomes line up on equatorial plane of cell
Chromosomes are attached to the spindle fibers by kinetochores at the centromere region
Anaphase
Centromeres divide and sister chromatids are pulled to opposite poles of the cell
Telophase
Final Stage of Mitosis
Nuclear membrane and nucleolus reappear; chromosomes disperse into chromatin and cytokinesis occurs
Cytokinesis
cytoplasm and organelles of the original cell are divided between the two daughter cells
Cell Plate
Forms at the equator in between the two new nuclei in plant cells
Cleavage Furrow
In animal cells, cytokinesis begins when the cell membrane begins to invaginate (pinch inward) that encircles the cell at the equator
