Lab Exercise #10: Photosynthesis Flashcards
Autotrophs (self-feeders)
Produce their own food molecules using inorganic carbon dioxide as a source of carbon
Stoma
Small openings in epidermis of the leaf or stem of a plant. Allows gas exchange to occur
Stroma
Fluid-filled inside the inner membrane. Location of the carbon-fixing dark reactions
Guard Cells
Lie on each side of the stoma and regulate its opening and closing
Mesophyll
In between the upper and lower epidermis. Location of the photosynthetic cells
Upper portion consists of tall, tightly packed cells
Lower portion consists of more rounded cells that are separated from one another by air spaces to allow circulation of gases through the leaf
Thylakoids
Flattened membrane sacs
Light reactions of photosynthesis occurs here
Lamellae
Membranes that connect adjacent grana together
Grana
Stacks of thylakoids
Spectroscope
an optical device for producing and observing a spectrum of light or radiation from any source
ROYGBIV
Red (longest wavelengths) Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet (shortest wavelengths)
Short wavelengths have _______ energy
High Energy
Long wavelengths have _______ energy
Low Energy
Which organelle does photosynthesis?
Chloroplasts
Why does chlorophyll appear green?
Chlorophyll does not absorb green and instead reflects it
What does the presence of starch in a portion of the leaf indicate?
it indicated that photosynthesis occurred in order to produce the starch
