lab exam 2 radiation Flashcards

1
Q

is there a correlation between the number of germinated seeds in amount of radiation administered?

A

negative correlation, because as radiation went up, the number of germinated seeds went down

Q

is there a correlation between the average plant Heights in amount of radiation administered?

A

as radiation went up, the height of the plants went down, so it’s also a negative correlation

Q

what can be concluded concerning the effects of radiation and see germination? is radiation beneficial or harmful to the seeds?

A

as radiation increases number of seeds germinated decreases, therefore, it isn’t beneficial to the seeds.

Q

which treatment group did you expect to have the most abnormalities in comparison to the control group? Why? did you see this?

A

The group with the highest radiation. yes we saw this because it didn’t germinate at all. radiation has an effect on the fertility of the plants.

Q

what are two possible negative abnormalities that could occur in plants from exposure to Strong radiation?

A

it could be a stunt in their growth, and the possibility of genetic mutations.

Q

how does strong radiation cause abnormalities in plants?

A

strong radiation forms, a mutation in the DNA of the plants. The mutated DNA makes mutated proteins and sometimes no protein at all. mutated proteins causes the plants to grow abnormally. if the plant has no proteins then the seeds will not germinate as seen with the highest radiation.

Q

Why are control groups needed in this experiment?

A

Control groups are needed because we don’t know how squash or radish seeds grow on their own. so it’s crucial to be able to compare the radiated seeds with normal growing seeds.
