Lab Exam Flashcards
what is epithelium?
used to line surfaces and form protective barriers. secretes mucous, hormones and other substances.
has free apical surface and attached basal surface.
what are the 4 simple and stratified epithelia called?
simple squamous (thin, scaly cells), simple cuboidal (like a cube), and simple columnar (tall, narrow cells), they are one layer
psuedostratified columnar
stratified squamous, stratified cuboidal, stratified columnar (rare), transitional epithelium, 2 layers or more
what is the most common strain found in histology called?
H&E : 90% of slides
what gives blue color on slide?
hematoxylin
eosinophili gives what stain?
red pink and orange
basophili gives what stain?
blue
what are the 4 basic tissue types in the body?
ephithelial
connective
muscular
nervous
what are the characteristics of pseudostratified columnar?
- not all cells reach free surface
- shorter cells covered over by taller ones
- look stratified
- every cell reaches basement membrane
single row of thin cells, permits rapid diffusion/transport of substances, secretes serous fluids is called what?
simple squamous epithelium
single layer of square / round cells, absorption/secretion, mucus production and movement, found in liver, thyroid, mammary/salivary glands, bronchioles and kidney tubles?
simple cuboidal epithelium
single row, tall narrow cells, oval nuclei in bottom half of cell, brush border of microvilli, i listed in some organs, may possess goblet cells, absorbs and secretes, mucus secretion
simple columnar epithelium
looks multilayered, some not reaching free surface, all touch basement membrane, nuclei at several layers, with cilia and goblet cells, secretes and propels mucus
pseudostratified epithelium
