Lab Equipment (Unit 1) Flashcards
3-prong jaw clamp
Used to attach heavier or more bulky equipment to support apparatus (like a ring stand)
Glass or plastic; used for storing or measuring an approximate amount of liquid (ex: approximately 50 mL)
Beaker tongs (with beaker)
Used to move hot beakers
Buret
Used to add a liquid to a reaction drop-by-drop; most commonly used in titrations
Burner
Used to heat substances to higher temperatures or to heat quickly
Clamp holder
Used to attach specific clamp endings to a support structure
Clay triangle
Used to hold a crucible in place on a ring over a burner
Used to heat small amounts of solid substances at high temperatures
Crucible tongs
Used to handle hot crucibles or other small items
Digital scale

Used to weigh out a mass of a solid substance; may look different due to differing models
Double buret clamp
Used to attach two burets to a support structure
Erlenmeyer flask
Used for heating liquids
Evaporating dish
Used to contain small volumes of liquids being evaporated
Florence flask
used for mixing liquids
Forceps
Used to pick up small objects or clumps of solid substances
Funnel
used to transfer liquids from one container to another, particularly when you are pouring from a larger container into a smaller one
Glass stirring rod & rubber policeman
Glass stirring rod - used to stir liquids or liquid solutions and in decanting (a method of mixture separation)
Rubber policeman - fits on the tip of a glass stirring rod and is used to collect wet solid off glassware
Graduated cylinder
Used to measure liquid volume more precisely than non-graduated glassware - typically to the nearest tenth of a millileter.
Graduated pipet
Used to measure a liquid precisely; can be used to measure volume to the hundredths place.
(Very similar to buret. Buret is much longer and has a valve at the bottom. While burets are used to add an undetermined volume of a liquid drop by drop to a reaction until something expected occurs, gradated pipets are used to add a predetermined amount of liquid.)
Hot plate

Used to heat a substance to lower temperatures or more slowly than a burner
Mortar and pestle
used to grind solids into fine powder
Pipet
Used to dispense a liquid drop by drop; also comes in a disposable form
Pipet bulb
Used to create a vacuum to draw liquid up into a pipet
Plastic wash bottle
Used to rinse items with DISTILLED water (not regular tap water); NOT used to squirt classmates!
Ring Clamp
Used to support glassware over a burner; comes in various ring sizes
Ring stand
Used to support a ring or object over a burner; the most common type of support structure
Rubber tubing
Carries gas from the gas jet to the burner
Safety googles
Worn to protect eyes while in the lab anytime heat, glassware, or chemicals are used
Scoopula
used to retrieve or transfer solid material (half scoop, half spatula)
Stoppers
Used to close test tubes or other glassware. May be made of rubber or cork. Rubber may feature holes for insertion of thermometers or tubing.
Test tubes
Used to hold small amounts of substances
Test-tube brush
Used to clean the inside of a test tube
Test-tube holder
Used to hold a test tube over a flame or move hot test tubes
Test-tube rack
can be wooden or plastic; used to hold test tubes
Thermometer
Used to measure temperature
Utility tongs

General useful tongs for moving objects unsafe to handle
Volumetric Flask
Used to make solutions of precise concentrations
Volumetric Pipet
Used to add or measure an extremely precise and accurate volume of liquid (exactly 5.00 mL, 10.00 mL, etc.)
Watch glass
used to store or weigh out solids, or to cover a beaker or evaporation dish
Wire gauze
Used to spread heat from a flame over the bottom of an object; often used to support an object over a flame on a ring that is itself larger than the object; sometimes includes a ceramic circle embedded within the square.
