Q

Gray Cook

A

-obtained his degree in physical therapy from the University of Miami School of Medicine with a focus sports rehabilitation
-performed research in motor learning
-certified Strength coach (NSCA)
-consultant for the NFL, NBA, NHL, + WNBA
-created the FMS
-has a practicing physical therapy clinic in Danville, Virginia

Q

goal of FMS

A

-to create a screening process that would allow anyone dealing with active individuals (i.e., fitness professionals, exercise physiologists, physical therapist, etc.) to easily set a baseline of movement ability + to decide whether an individual had deficient movement

-also potentially identify if someone is at risk for injury

16
Q

what type of movement- hurdle step

A

dynamic movement

17
Q

what type of movement- overhead squat

A

dynamic movement

18
Q

minimum passing possible score on FMS

A

14
-scoring 2’s

19
Q

lowest + highest score on a movement of FMS

A

lowest = 0
highest = 3

20
Q

FMS score of 0

A

-there is pain in the movement
-the test is stopped
-the client is referred to a clinician

21
Q

FMS score of 1

A

the movement pattern is deficient + below required minimums

22
Q

FMS score of 2

A

the movement pattern is sufficient enough to load + train that pattern

23
Q

FMS score of 3

A

the movement pattern is near perfect

24
Q

how do we calculate score for bilateral tests (hurdle step, inline lunge, rotary mobility, shoulder mobility, ASLR)

A

lowest score counts

25
Q

best possible composite score on FMS

A

21

-scoring a 21 does not mean the subject is a fantastic athlete, or that they are never going to get injured; a 21 simply means they have more than sufficient movement patterns
-a 19 could be potentially as bad for an individual as a 14
-each individual movement must be analyzed

26
Q

is the order of FMS required

A

no, recommended
-clients can start + end with any order of movements + it won’t negatively affect the scoring results

27
Q

SEE FMS SCORING + INSTRUCTIONS FLASHCARDS FROM GORDON’S LECTURES

A
28
Q

an athlete can generally achieve this in a ____ minute sequence at the start of a training session

A

10-15 minute

28
Q

what must be done before any type of performance or skill training takes place

A

movement deficiencies + asymmetries must be corrected
-an athlete must be able to get at least 2’s on the 7 movements of the FMS before training

29
Q

these corrective progressions need to be ____ + ____

A

-efficient
-effective

30
Q

correcting a ____in the FMS may result in improvements in the ____

A

-lower-level issue
-higher-level movements

31
Q

to correct these deficiencies + asymmetries, it’s best to do what

A

-follow NASM’s corrective strategy
-or FMS’s corrective continuum
