Lab 7 Heart and Blood Flashcards
non-living fluid matrix
90% water
55% blood
Plasma
Living cells that are suspended in plasma
45% of blood
Erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets
Formed elements
cell fragments that function in the blood clotting
one half the size of RBC
platelets
blood: average liters for adults?
5.5 liters
red blood cell
most numerous
no nucleus
biconcave
Erythrocyte
white blood cell
protect against diseases - immune responses
contain nucleus
less numerous
leukocyte
allergic reaction and parasitic worm infections
Eosinophils
most numerous WBC
WBC arrive at infection site and found in acute bacterial infections
Neutrophils
Found during a chronic infections
large wbc 2-3 times the size of a RBC
Monocytes
cancer of the WBC
Leukemia
What are the heart sounds
Lubb- first heart sound
A-V valves close as ventricular pressure rises
Dupp- second heart sound
semilunar valves close as blood flows back towards ventricles due to ventricular pressure decreasing
Murmur- sound heard when Mitral/bicuspid valve doesn’t close completely and blood backwashes into left atrium
Cell surface marker on RBC. trigger the immune response
antigen
Protein in plasma that binds to matching antigen
–> Agglutination
Antibody
clumping of the RBC when antigens & anti-body form a comples
agglutination
