lab 5; muscle pays Flashcards
A motor neuron and all of the muscle fibers it stimulates.
motor unit
The space where a motor neuron and a muscle fiber meet. (synapticknob and sarcolemma
neuromuscular junction
An action potential in a muscle fiber.
motor impulse
More motor units sending AP’s to more muscle fibers- increases force in a whole muscle
motor unit recruitment
When AP’s are sent so frequently that the fiber cannot completely relax before the next contraction. Increases force in a single muscle fiber.
summation
When AP’s are sent so frequently that the fiber cannot relax at all.
tetanus
When a muscle loses the ability to contract. Due to the buildup of lacticacid or depletion of electrolytes
fatique
When a few fibers undergo sustained contraction while the rest of themuscle is at rest. Maintains posture
muscle tone
A contraction that produces limb movement. The muscle shortens during an isotonic contraction
isotonic contraction
A contraction that produces tension without movement. The muscle does NOT shorten during an isometric contraction
isometric contractions
