Lab 4 - Skeletal Muscles Flashcards
Muscles are comprised of what tissue?
Contractile tissue that assists in the movement of the body and organ
What are the 3 types of muscle?
Smooth
Cardiac
Skeletal
What is Smooth muscle?
Not striated
Involuntary
Found in GI, reproductive, ureters, and Blood vessels
Is circular and longitudinal
A single Nucleus that is centrally located
What is the Cardiac Muscle?
Is striated
Involuntary
ONLY found in the HEART
Cells connected by intercalated discs
1 or 2 nuclei
What is Skeletal Muscle?
Is Striated
Voluntary
Attached to bones
Longitudinal layers/ elongated cells
Multinucleated/ located to the side of cells
Smooth Muscle is involved in what 2 special types of contractions?
Peristalsis and Segmentation
What is Peristalsis?
movement of material
What is Segmentation?
Stationary rhythmic contraction and relaxation of intestinal smooth muscle
Result is mixing
What is the purpose of skeletal muscle?
Maintain posture
Movement
What are the skeletal muscle attachments?
The Origin and Insertion
What is the Origin?
The end of the muscle that is attached to a stationary part of bone
What is the Insertion?
The end of the muscle that is attached to a mobile section of bone
What is the Biceps femoris?
Located on the Lateral part of the hind leg
What is the Cutaneous trunci?
Located directly under the skin, horizontal striations, and is separated from the skin
(Thoracic and Abdominal Cavity)
What is the Gastrocnemius?
Located in the middle of the hind leg and contracts when you move the leg
What is the Gluteus Group?
Located anterior of the tail and is dark pink in color
What is the Gracilis?
Located on the medial part of the hind leg and is a thin sheet
What is the Infraspinatus?
Located below the scapula ridge
What is the Latissimus dorsi?
Located caudally of the shoulder and the striations fan out caudal/dorsal
What is the Longissimus dorsi?
Runs along the exterior of the spine
What is the Obliquus externus abdominis?
Located lateral of the rectus abdominis and striations run diagonally cranial/dorsal
What is the Pextoralis profundi?
Wraps around the medial part of front legs
What is the Quadriceps femoris?
Located near stifle on cranial part of the hind leg
What is the Semimembranosus?
Located on the inner leg, lateral to Gracilis
What is the Rectus abdominis?
Located on the stomach region (Abs)
What is the Semitendinosus?
Located on caudal part of hind leg, below the tail, and is tendon like
What is the Serratus ventralis?
Medial, beneath the latissimus dorsi, large white like make it look like knuckles
What is the Supraspinatus?
Located in front of scapula ridge
What is the Trapezius?
Located dorsal of the shoulder and looks like a large dark triangle
What is the triceps group?
Located on caudal part of front leg
- Subscapularis
- Psoas major
- Cutaneous trunci
What is the Subcapularis?
Located on back of scapula
What is the Psoas major?
Begins at medial surface caudal to the last rib and ventral to the vertebrae
What is the Cutaneous trunci?
muscle layer that lines the skin
seen after skinning the animal
responsible for skin twitching reflexes
