Lab 4 Flashcards
What is VO2MAX?
maximal oxygen uptake (the upper limit of aerobic metabolism)
VO2MAX is the gold standard of cardiorespiratory fitness and is often related to success in endurance sports
What is Anaerobic Threshold?
Anaerobic threshold- the exercise intensity at which aerobic metabolism can be maintained at a steady state prior to increased contribution of the anaerobic system
What are Two primary ways to measure anaerobic threshold?
1) LACTATE THRESHOLD - using blood lactate “breakpoint”
2) VENTILATORY THRESHOLD - using ventilation and gas exchange (VO2 and VCO2 )
What is Lactate Threshold?
(LT1 & LT2)
Lactate Threshold 1 (LT1) = Exercise intensity before blood
lactate begins to accumulate
- lactate clearance > lactate production
MAJORITY FROM AEROBIC BUT INCREASED ANAEROBIC
Lactate Threshold 2 (LT2) = distinct sudden breakpoint
leading to increase in blood lactate
- lactate clearance < lactate production
What is Ventilatory Threshold?
the exercise intensity where there is a disproportionate increase in carbon dioxide production, and oxygen consumption (VO2),
signaling a switch from predominantly aerobic energy production to significant anaerobic metabolism.
- Occurs at similar points to LT
What is the V Slope Method?
The graphic relationship between VO2 and VCO2 allows for determination of VT by locating the breakaway point in which the slope of the line changes and forms a new slope.
How to calculate VT using V Slope method
- Plot VCO2 (y axis) and VO2 (x axis)
- Create 2 lines of best fit
- Points where lines intersect = Vent. Threshold
- Determine intensity from threshold (HR, VO2, Workload)
Exercise Prescription from GXT / Threshold
Results from GXT can be used to prescribe exercise / training
zones using: 1.) Heart rate, 2.) RPE, 3.) Work Rate (watts)
What is the Three Zone Model (LT or VT)?
