Lab 3: Biochemistry Of Breakfast Flashcards
Define autotrophs??
An organism capable of self nourishment by using inorganic material for nutrients and photosynthesis for energy.
Define heterotrophs??
An organism requiring organic compounds for its principal source of food.
Calories??
Amount of energy required to raise the temp of 1 kg of water by 1 degree Celsius. 1, 000 kcal=1calorie
Monomer
A molecule of low molecular weight that may bond to other molecules to form polymers.
Carbohydrate (CHO)
Organic molecules that always contain Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen.
Glucose
Monosaccharide. 1/3 dietary monosaccharides. Main product of photosynthesis. Primary source of energy in cells.
Cellulose??
A starch, polysaccharide makes up the structural component of plant cell walls.
Peptides
Short chain of amino acid monomers linked by peptide covalent bonds. When the carboxyl group of one amino acid reacts to the amino group of another.
Polypeptides??
Long, continuous and unbranched peptide chain.
Peptide bond??
A covalent bond created when the carboxyl group of one molecule links with the amino group of another.
Define BIURET’S solution??
Identifies PEPTIDE BONDS. Turns blue/violet if protein is present.
3ml mixed with 2ml sodium hydroxide.
How much fat % does raw cow milk contain??
About 4%.
Define SUDAN DYE??
Turns pink/red in presence of lipids.
Must add 5 drops.
Define BENEDICT’S SOLUTION??
Product which measures the presence of sugars.
Will turn BLUE to ORANGE.
Define LUGOLS IODINE??
Product that turns from BROWN to DARK BLUE in presence of starch.
