Q

What is photosynthesis??

A

The process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use the energy from the sun to produce glucose. Usually uses water, thus releasing the oxygen. Associated with chlorophyll.

Q

What is cellular respiration??

A

The conversion of food molecules, releasing its chemical energy, which is then partially captured in the form of coenzyme ATP.

Q

Define Aerobic Respiration??

A

The catabolic reactions and processes in the cells of organisms to convert biochemical energy into ATP requiring O2 as an electron acceptor (oxidizing agent) and then release waste products.

Q

List the processes of aerobic respiration??

A

1: Glycolysis=the metabolic pathway that converts glucose into pyruvate, freeing energy in the form of ATP and the reduced NADH. Occurs in cytosol.
2: Krebs (Citric) Cycle= chemical reaction used by all aerobic organisms to generate energy through the oxidation of acetate derived from food products.
3: Electron Transport Chain=the coupling of electron transfer between electron donor(NADH) and electron acceptor(O2) with the transfer of H+ protons across a membrane. This results in a electrochemical proton gradient used to generate chemical energy (ATP).

Q

List the process of Aenerobic Respiration??

A

1: Glycolysis: the metabolic pathway that converts glucose into pyruvate, freeing energy in the form of ATP and the reduced NADH. Occurs in cytosol.
2: Fermentation= metabolic process converting sugars into acids, gases, and/or alcohol in oxygen-starved cells. In humans, it NADH oxidizes pyruvate into lactic acid, recycling the NAD.

Q

Define phenyl red??

A

pH indicator. Changes from pink/red to orange/yellow due to CO2 de solving into carbolic acid, thus lowering water pH.

Define Global Warming??

A

The Earths gradual increase in temp due to large amounts of Greenhouse Gases we create.

16
Q

Define Deforestation??

A

The removal of forest where the land may be used for non forest needs increasing CO2.

17
Q

Define Moving Average??

A

a series of averages of different subsets of the full data set.

18
Q

Define Biomass??

A

Biological material derived from living, or recently living things, which can be converted and used directly or indirectly.

19
Q

Define Anaerobic respiration??

A

Cellular respiration without oxygen. Pyruvate is then converted to Lactic Acid through fermentation.

20
Q

Define fermentation??

A

Metabolic process after glycolysis where NADH cannot continue forth due to lack of oxygen. The NADH oxidizes, and reduces pyruvate into acid, gas, or alcohol.

21
Q

Define Positive Control??

A

A well established test used to determine the effectiveness of a new test.

22
Q

Negative control??

A

Group where no phenomenon is expected, ensuring there is no effect where there shouldn’t be.

23
Q

Elodea??

A

Water weed native to North America.
