Lab 7: Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis??
The process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use the energy from the sun to produce glucose. Usually uses water, thus releasing the oxygen. Associated with chlorophyll.
Describe equation for photosynthesis??
Energy(sunlight)+6 CO2+6 H2O=
C6H12O6+6 O2
C6H12O6+6 O2=6 CO2+6 H2O+Energy(heat+work)
What is cellular respiration??
The conversion of food molecules, releasing its chemical energy, which is then partially captured in the form of coenzyme ATP.
Define chloroplast??
Plastid (small particles in the cytoplasm of plant cells and some animals containing pigment, starch, oil, or protein) containing chlorophyll and other pigments involved in photosynthesis.
Define chlorophyll?
4naturally occurring pigments found in photosynthetic organisms.
What are the two stages of photosynthesis??
1: Light Dependent Process
2: Light Independent Process(Dark Reactions)
Define Light Dependent Process??
Requiring the direct energy of light to make energy carrier molecules used in next phase.
Define Light Independent Process (Dark Reaction)??
When the products of Light Reaction are used to make covalent bonds of CHO.
Define ATP??
Adenosine Triphospate. A nucleotide derived from Adenosine. Transports chemical energy within cells.
Define Aerobic Respiration??
The catabolic reactions and processes in the cells of organisms to convert biochemical energy into ATP requiring O2 as an electron acceptor (oxidizing agent) and then release waste products.
List the processes of aerobic respiration??
1: Glycolysis=the metabolic pathway that converts glucose into pyruvate, freeing energy in the form of ATP and the reduced NADH. Occurs in cytosol.
2: Krebs (Citric) Cycle= chemical reaction used by all aerobic organisms to generate energy through the oxidation of acetate derived from food products.
3: Electron Transport Chain=the coupling of electron transfer between electron donor(NADH) and electron acceptor(O2) with the transfer of H+ protons across a membrane. This results in a electrochemical proton gradient used to generate chemical energy (ATP).
List the process of Aenerobic Respiration??
1: Glycolysis: the metabolic pathway that converts glucose into pyruvate, freeing energy in the form of ATP and the reduced NADH. Occurs in cytosol.
2: Fermentation= metabolic process converting sugars into acids, gases, and/or alcohol in oxygen-starved cells. In humans, it NADH oxidizes pyruvate into lactic acid, recycling the NAD.
Define phenyl red??
pH indicator. Changes from pink/red to orange/yellow due to CO2 de solving into carbolic acid, thus lowering water pH.
Define Sodium Azide??
A mitochondrial inhibitor.
What are the dependent/independent variables of investigation 3??
Independent: energy source
Dependent: amount of gas produced.
