Lab 3 Flashcards
Components of a long bone
Epiphysis (spongy), metaphysis, diaphysis (medullary cavity, compact bone), epiphyseal line
Where does bone development occur?
Epiphyseal line
Where is red bone marrow stored?
Distal epiphysis
Where is yellow bone marrow found?
Medullary cavity
Skeletal system function
Support, protect, lever for movement, storage of minerals and lipids, produce RBCs
Long bone
longer than it is wide
Irregular bone
shape different than any other bone, shaped for specific function
Flat bone
compact bone with spongy in between, sternum and cranial case
Short bone
compact on outside, spongy inside, higher impact for shock absorption. Tarsal/carpal
Cartilage at the end of long bones
articular cartilage (hyaline)
What lines the medullary cavity
endosteum
Lamellae
Part of compact bone between lacuna
Periosteum
outer fiber surrounding bone, perforated by nutrient arteries
Contents of the central canal
Nerve, vein, artery
