LAB 2 - Streptococcus, Enterococcus & "Strep-like" bacteria Flashcards
pharyngitis, TSS, scarlet fever
S. pyogenes
a pathogen in any amount
neonatal infection
S. agalactiae
not quite as serious pharyngitis
Group C and G
respiratory infections, meningitis, septicemia
S. pneumoniae
cause of bacteiral endocarditis
viridans group Strep
bacteremia, meningitis, prosthetic valve endocarditis; carcinoma of colon
S. bovis group or Group D
frequent cause of UTI
Enterococci
S. anginosus
- included in viridans; most common isolate
- alpha, beta, or no hem
- sweet, butterscotch odor
- abscess of oropharynx, brain, peritoneal cavity, abscess associated bacteremia
Aerococcus urinae
- looks alpha but workup as y hem
- urine pathogen
Abiotrophia
- satellites, vit B6 dependent, symbiotic Strep
- important to smear all satellites
GAS other disease conditions
- after bacterial pharyngitis = post-infection sequelae
> acute rheumatic fever
> acute glomerulonephritis - erysipelas, cellulitis, pyoderma
- Septicemia
- TSS
the most common cause of community acquired bacterial pneumonia
S. pneumoniae
- rusty sputum due to blood-tinged aspirations
- vaccines containing most common capsular serotypes recommended for elderly and immunocomp patients
viridans group Strep
- normal inhabitants of mouth and URT
- dental plaque, wound infections, brain abscesses
- subacute bacterial endocarditis in patients w damaged or artificial heart valves (after a dental procedure)
GDS septicemia is associared with
colon cancer
Enterococci resistant to…
beta-lactams and aminoglycosides
