Lab 19 - Disinfectant Effectiveness Flashcards
what are antimicrobial agents?
chemical or physical agents that kill (cidal) or inhibit growth (static) of microbes
what is sterilization?
killing all vegetative cells, viruses and endospores
what is sterilization used for?
surgical instruments
what is disinfection?
killing most or all vegetative cells and viruses
what is a disinfectant?
for non-living things, example: for cleaning a lab bench
what is an antiseptic?
for living things, example: mouth wash
what is pasteurization?
reduces the number of spoilage microbes and kills pathogens. example: for milk
what are the considerations when disinfecting?
-the type of microorganism
-the numbers present initially
-organic matter/biofilms
-time of exposure
-the risk of infection
-composition of the item
-toxicity
-cost and availability
what do chemicals do to bacteria?
they disrupt cell membranes, proteins, or nucleic acids
what are quaternary ammonium compounds?
quats are cationic detergents that punch holes in the bacterias membranes and denature cell’s proteins
what does povidone iodine do?
it oxidizes proteins and nucleic acids
what does DRT stand for?
decimal reduction time
what is DRT?
the time required for 90% of a microbial population to be killed under specific conditions
what is an example of DRT?
90% of 10,000 = 9000 killed and 1000 left in 5 mins.
Takes 20 mins to kill the whole population
