lab 1 intro Flashcards
what is a detector?
it picks up a phyisological event
what is a transducer?
it detects a non-electrical event and converts it into an electrical signal
what is analog voltage?
it is a voltage that varies in magnitude with a measured variable
what is an analog to digital converter?
it converts input analog voltage to a number proportional to the magnitude of the voltage or current
what is a digital voltage?
it is a number that varies with the magnitude of the analog voltage
what is an amplifier?
it increases the strength of the detected signal so it can cause deflections in a recording system
what is a pre-amplifier (pod)?
it increases the strength of the signal prior to input in the power lab
what is a recorder?
it is the powerlab hardware unit with labtutor software that includes the on-screen paper input
what are the steps of the signal getting from the transducer to the computer?
the transducer converts the signal to analog voltage, the powerlab hardware amplifies it, filters it and converts it from analog to digital then the computer displays it
what is the powerlab hardware?
it is a multichannel recording instrument that can amplify, filter and sample the signal; it also has an isolated stimulator
what are examples of transducers?
event markers, force or pressure transducers
what are stimulators?
they are output voltage that induce a response in a nerve or muscle
what is the principle of stopcocks?
the direction that the off tab is pointed in will close that line; the others are open to flow
what is the stroop test?
a way of inducing physiological stress in human volunteers
what is specific gravity?
the relative density of a solution with reference to a reference solution
