L9 - Psychodynamic Approach Flashcards
3 levels to the mind are
Conscious mind
Preconscious mind
Unconscious mind
Describe the conscious mind
Thoughts and feelings a person is aware of
Describe the preconscious mind
Thoughts, feelings, and memories a person isn’t currently aware of but could access if they wanted
Describe the unconscious mind
Thoughts, feelings, and memories which are inaccessible which control our daily actions and behaviours unknowingly
What does the mind do to thoughts, feelings, and memories in the unconscious?
Prevents them from reaching the conscious as they’d otherwise cause anxiety
3 structures to the personality are what?
Id
Ego
Superego
Describe the id
Responsible for sexual and aggressive drives and pleasure-seeking and unreasonable behaviours
The id operates on the pleasure principle which is…?
Wanting immediate gratification regardless of whether it’s suitable to get it or not since it’s irrational
Describe the ego
Mediates between the id, the superego, and the reality of the external world
The ego operates on the reality principle which is what?
Compromising between the id’s impulsive demands and superego’s moralistic demands to produce behaviour suitable for the circumstances
The superego is what?
Part of the mind which wants to follow society’s rules, and is responsible for guilt
Superego is made up of two parts which are
Conscience
Ego-ideal
What’s the conscience?
Determines which behaviours are acceptable
Causes feelings of guilt when breaking rules
Describe the ego-ideal
What a person strives towards and wants to be
+ related to connections
