Describe the humanistic approach
Studies a person and their uniqueness as a whole
Emphasises that people have free will
Can still make choices within these constraints
Describe Maslow’s theory
Formed a hierarchy in needs which emphasise the importance of personal growth and fulfilment
What type of psychology did Maslow’s theory lead to?
Positive psychology (Uses scientific understanding and intervention to help achieve a satisfactory life)
What are the 5 stages of the hierarchy?
Physiological Safety (employment, family, health) Love and belonging (friends, family, intimacy) Esteem (confidence and achievement) Self-actualisation
How does the hierarchy of needs work?
Simplest at bottom and complex at top
Motivation to progress through higher levels
Need to fulfil each level before progressing
Describe self-actualisation
A person reaching their full potential and the best version of themselves
More creative and accepting
How can self-actualisation be experienced?
Peak experiences
Moments of inspiration and ecstasy during which one fells they can leave all doubts and fears behind
What does the humanistic approach believe about other forces
Still affected by other forces, e.g. biological
What are some reasons why the humanistic approach has rejected scientific methods?
Humans have free will and scientific methods focus on determinism (no free will)
People’s subjective experience and understanding of world is more important that objectivity and empiricism
Humans should be viewed as a whole and not be rejected to components
