L5 - Cognitive Flashcards
Define cognitive approach
Focusing on internal mental processes, e.g. attention, memory, and interpretation
Behaviour is influenced by un/conscious thoughts
What is the internal processing model?
Information is received through senses and processed by the brain
Like a computer
What are some assumptions?
Attention, thinking, storage, retrieval
Have to use inferences as can’t study directly
Define schemas
Cognitive frameworks which are developed through experience to build expectations on how to behave
What is a role schema?
Schema about what behaviour is expected from a particular person
What is an event schema?
Schema on what to expect from an event, like a party
Schemas act as a shortcut how?
Our mind can fill in gaps about information that may be missed
Important differences between human and computer?
Humans have emotions and thoughts, unlimited memory
How is information processed using the role of models
Input through senses, coded into memory, combined with stored info
MSM
2 types of models
Theoretical models e.g. representations, pictorial, indicates cause and effect in mental processes
Computer models
Advantage related to applications?
Applied to different areas e.g. social cognition and forming impressions, forming cognitive errors and bias
Aids understanding
Advantage related to scientific methods?
Emphasises them
Maintains high levels of control, better identifying cause and effect
Increases being scientific
Disadvantage related to inferences?
Can’t study directly so use inferences
May be based on little information from research
May be subjective
- related to ignorance
Ignores role of emotion and motivation
Therefore doesn’t explain why cognitive processes occur
Motivation irrelevant to computer but relevant to humans
- related to using computer models
Too many differences
Computers don’t make mistakes, ignore available information, or forget
Not very accurate
