L2 - Behaviorism and CC Flashcards
Define the behavioural approach
A way of explaining behaviour in terms of what’s observed in terms of learning and interactions with the environment
Stimulus and response
Assumptions?
Focuses on behaviour being measured and observed
All behaviour is learnt and processes are same for humans and animals
Advantage of behaviourism
Easily tested and measured
Lab design
Highly controlled
Objective and repeatable
Disadvantage of behaviourism related to determinism
Sees humans/animals as passive recipients which have no control
Little/no conscious thought
Minimises free will
- related to reductionism
Focuses on lower level explanations
Stimulus-response can’t explain complex human behaviours like attachment
Advantage of classical conditioning?
Supported by the Little Albert experiment
Associated his fear of white rats to white fluffy objects
Works with humans and animals
Disadvantage of CC related to Little Albert?
Little Albert was in a lab
Low ecological validity
May have different results in reality
Disadvantage of CC related to Menzies?
Sample of hydrophobic people
Only 2% had negative experience with water
Must be other explanations
