L9 GED Flashcards
1
Q
How can meiosis give rise to genetic variation?
A
- independent assortment
- crossing over
2
Q
In what phase of the cell cycle does DNA replicate?
G1,G2,S?
A
S phase
3
Q
What are telomeres and why are they important?
A
- telomeres are ending sequence of DNA
- they prevent DNA molecules from joining each other
- telomeres normally shorten up after each round of replication
4
Q
Which enzyme can prevent shortening of telomeres?
A
Telomerase enzyme can prevent shortening of the chromosomal DNA, eg in stem cells
5
Q
What does it mean when a cell goes into SENESCENCE?
A
- telomeres shortens up
- cell cannot replicate anymore
it basically cell reaching a point where they stop replication, which is how it should be otherwise it is cancerogenous
