L 10 Flashcards
1
Q
What is incomplete dominance, use LDL example to explain?
A
- So incomplete dominance is what you with ‘normal’ heterozygous
- for example in LDL, Homozygous dominant produces enough LDL receptor, so no disease
Heterozygous produces SOME LDL receptor, so mild disease
recessive Homozygous, produces no LDL receptor so severe diseases
2
Q
What is co-dominance?
A
- phenotype shows both allele
3
Q
What is MULTIPLE ALLELES?
A
- There might be more than 2 alleles for a gene
- They will have a hierarchy of dominancy e.g (A> a1 > a )
4
Q
What is PLEIOTROPY and can you give an example of the gene that show pleiotropy?
A
- pleiotropy is when one gene mutation influenced more than one train
For example in PCD, the gene encoding for dynein mutates it will affect the cilia in the respiratory system as well as sperm cells.
5
Q
What is penetrance in terms of genotypes/phenotype?
A
- penetrance measures the percentage of individuals with a given genotype who express the EXPECTED PHENOTYPE
6
Q
What is EXPRESSIVITY?
A
it measures how MUCH A phenotype is expressed in relation to given phenotype ( e.g how dark is your skin)
