L 13 Flashcards
What type of genetic maps are there? (3)
- Genetic/linkage map
- Cytogenic map
- Physical map
What is cM as measure for genetic map and how many base pairs does it approximately have
- cM = centimorgans
1 cM = 1 million base pairs
What is a cytogenetic map based on?
It is based on banding pattern of the chromosomes
What is a genetic/linkage based on?
It is based on the distance of genes estimated by the crossing over events rate that occurs between these genes
What is each arm of a chromosome ( e.g when attached to centromere) called?
- short arm = p (petiteee)
- longs arm = q
What is the frequency of crossing over in chromosomes relative to?
- it is relative to the distance between each gene on the same chromosomes
- the closer the gene the LESS frequent the crossing events
- the further the gene from each other , the MORE frequent the crossing over
If the recombinant frequency is less than 50% what does that tell us about the gene?
- genes are linked
if the recombinant frequency is 50% what does it tell us about the genes?
genes are on different chromosomes OR are far apart in the chromosome
