L9 Basic Principles of memory Flashcards
What is phonological similarity?
words that sound similar often get confused
What is semantic similarity?
no confusion when words were different even if they had the same meaning
What can damage to left hemisphere cause
disrupted language function
Visuo-spatial sketchpad
Part of working memory used for navigation
-stores information about spatial and visual form
Can be divided into
- visual cache——> form and colour
- inner scribe——-> spatial and movement
What does double dissociation show
evidence of independent processes
What is primary memory?
Portion of present space of time
Linked to conscious experience
Retrieval is effortless
What is secondary memory?
Genuine past
Unconscious- permanent
Retrieval is effortful
What is the phonological store?
Coding depending on the phonology of words
Encoding for the memory
Acts as a tape recorder for a limited time
Contents are actively refreshed by an articulatory loop
Disruption of the articulatory loop results in poor retention in the phonological store
What is the visuospatial sketch pad?
Necessary for holding online sequence of visually guided actions
Also necessary for seeing in the mind’s eye
What did De Renaissance find with brain damaged patients?
Some patients had impaired digit spans and others had impaired spatial spans
Double dissociation showing independent processes involved
How can the visuospatial skechpad be divided?
Visual cache- passively stores visual information about form and colour
Inner scribe- stores spatial and movement information and can rehearse the contents of the visual cache
Working memory model
Baddeley and Hitch- 1974
Indicates there are different components
-phonological store which is refreshed by articulatory loop
- visuospatial sketchpad.
- central executive—-> drives the whole system and allocated data to the subsystems. Also deals with cognitive tasks
