L8: Nerves & Tissues Flashcards
Name 2 anatomically distinct systems
1) Pulmonary
2) Systemic
Function of arteries
Tubes that carry blood away from the heart toward tissues
3 types of arteries
1) Large elastic conducting arteries
2) Medium muscular distributing arteries
3) Small arteries
Function of arteriovenous anastomosis
2 tubes that come together to give an alternative way for blood to flow
Define anastomoses
Link tubular structures to provide an alternative (collateral) route
What does collateral route mean?
Alternative/backup blood vessels
What are true anastamoses?
Between branches of muscular arteries
2 examples of true anastamoses
1) Around joints- artery kinked by joint flexion
2) Arterioventricular anastamoses- small arteries & veins
An example of potential/no anastamoses
Coronary artery- when blood vessels are damaged
Define vasa vasorum
Blood supply to tunica media and tunia adventitia
3 venous systems
1) Pulmonary venous system
2) Systemic venous system
3) Portal venous system
3 types of anastamoses
1) Arterioarterial Anastomoses
2) Venovenous Anastomoses
3) Arteriovenous Anastomoses
What does arteriovenous anastomoses connect?
Small arteries to veins
What does venovenous anastomoses connect?
2 veins
What does arterioarterial anastomoses connect?
2 arteries
What is tunica adventitia?
Outer and thick layer of the blood vessel wall
What is tunica media?
Middle layer of an artery/vein and has a thin connective layer
3 venous systems
1) Pulmonary venous system
2) Systemic venous system
3) Portal venous system
Function of veins
Carrys blood away from tissues into the heart
Structure of veins
tubes with a central lumen, with tunica intima/media/adventitia
Why are valves important?
Prevent backflow of blood
3 Venous flow pumps
1) Vascular venous pump
2) Muscular venous pump
3) Thoracic venous pump
What are vascular venous pumps?
Pair of veins either side of an artery
What does lymphatic system consist of ?
Lymph vessels, lymph nodes, lymphoid tissues & organs
