L6: Basic Tissue Types & Systems Flashcards
(33 cards)
Define tissues
Group of similar, identical, cells that act together to perform a specific function
Define organs
Organisation of several different kinds of tissues that are arranged togtherer to perform a special function
Define epithelia
Sheets of cells interconnected together, cover/lines surfaces
Functions:
- Protective for surfaces
Cover surfaces:
- Lining of blood vessels
- Lining of stomach
Functions of epithelia
Lining/cover surfaces
What fills the space between cells?
Extracellular matrix
4 tissue types
1) Epithelial tissue
2) Connective tissue
3) Nervous tissue
4) Muscle tissue
4 epithelia classification
- Cell shape
- Arrangement
- Specialisations on cells
- Specailised cells
3 cell shapes
- Simple squamous
- Simple cuboidal
- Simple columnar
3 cell arrangements
- Pseudostratified
- Stratified squamous
- Stratified transitional
Define pseudostratified
Made of closely packed cells arranged in layers as they’re different sizes
3 cell specialisations
- Microvilli
- Cilia
- Keratinised
Example of a specialised cell type within epithelium
Goblet cells
3 types of connective tissues
- Connective tissue proper
- Fluid connective tissues
- Supporting connective tissues
Features of connective tissue functions
1. What does it form?
Forms framework of body to preserve body form
- Structural support
- Attachment
- Physical protection
What are soft & hard connective tissue properties determined by?
Extracellular matrix they secrete
3 major matrix components
- Proteoglycans
- Collagen proteins
- Elastic fibres
PG: protein with many charged carb side chain
Collagen: Rope-like, bend but don’t stretch
Elastic: Stretchable
5 matrix determined properties
- Dermis of skin
- Tendon
- Ligament
- Cartilage
- Bone
2 types of cell that makes up nervous tissue
- Neurons
- Glial cells
Accumulation of nervous tissue cell bodies form brain & spinal cord & ganglia
What is nervous tissue found throughout the body as ?
Nerves
What does accumulation of nervous tissue cell bodies form?
Brain & spinal cord & ganglia
Function of neurons in nervous tissue
- Send electrical systems
- Receive information on short dendrites
- Send information along long axons
Function of glial cells
- Provide support/nutrients for neurons
- Wrap around axon to speed nerve signal
2 matter that makes up the spinal cord
- White matter
- Grey matter
What does white & grey matter contain?
White: Axons & glial cells
Grey: Neuron cell bodies & glial cells
