How does authorisation personality form?
Over-harsh parents who physically punish
Causes person to be submissive to them as they fear them
Result of over-harsh upbringing?
Hostility towards them taken out on those with less authority as can’t fight back
Qualities of a person with authorisation personality?
Dogmatic “Us” vs. “Them” Submissive to higher authorities Hostile to lower authorities Inflexible with beliefs
Describe authoritarian personality
Individuals with a collection of traits that make them more likely to obey an authority figure
+ related to arithmetic problem
Those who scored high on the Fascism scale were more likely to obey the order of holding onto electrical wiring whilst doing an arithmetic task relative those who scored low
+ related to shocking self
Those who scored high on F scale were more likely to shock themselves when getting something wrong on a learning task
What does the F scale measure?
Authorisation personalities
Questions like “rules should be followed, not changed”
Disadvantage
Authoritarian personalities are rare
Fewer than 65% of those who went up to maximum voltage will have it
Disadvantage related to F scale

What did Milgram and Elms do?
20 participants to 450V and 20 who went to 300V completed MMPI scale, F scale, and open questionnaire about relationship with parents
What did Milgram find?
Those who scored higher on F scale were more likely to obey and go up to maximum V and had more authoritarian traits
Scored same on MMPI
