L12.2 - Majority Influence Social Change Flashcards
Behaviour is based on what instead of what
Based on perceived norm not actual norm
Define perceived and actual norms
Perceived: what one thinks most others think and do
Actual: what others think and do in reality
Misperception is
The gap between the perceived and actual norm
Misperceptions are corrected by
Social norms interventions
First stage of SNIs
Identify widespread misconception of risky behaviour in target population
Second stage of SNIs
Perception correction strategies like media campaigns put out the actual norm
Population then brings own behaviour in line with actual norm
Majority influence causes
Conformity by changing behaviour to fit what they think is the social norm
How does obedience cause social change?
People may change beliefs because they’re inclined to, e.g. if there’s a law they must follow
+ re,aged to smoking
Teenagers exposed to message that peers don’t smoke were less likely to take up smoking
+ related to drink driving
In Montana 20% drink-drive but 92% believed most of their peers did
Displaying social norm through advertising reduced drink-driving related crashes
- related to bridging down alcohol use
Media campaigns across 14 colleges to try to bring down alcohol use
Survey at the start and 3 years later showed no change in perceived norm and actual alcohol use
