L7: Intelligence Flashcards
implicit theories of intelligence?
Implicit theories of intelligence
* Drive the way in which we perceive and evaluate our own and others’ intelligence
* Can give rise to more formal theories of intelligence
* Provide avenues for research testing explicit theories
Implicit concepts of intelligence
Sternberg et al. (1981) found 3 dimensions of implicit theories of intelligence:
* Practical problem-solving
→ ability to analyse situations well and to engage in a decision-making process that involves reasoning (theres also a component of how fast)
* Verbal abilities
→ Ability to express yourself and converse with others confidently and with some eloquence
* Social competence
→ Skills necessary to be accepted and fulfilled in society – knowledge, understanding, competency,
motivation, and confidence in terms of themselves and others
