L6: Personality part 3 Flashcards
social media?
Study hypothesised our digital footprint can predict personality
Predicting the Big 5 personality traits from digital footprints on social
media (Azucar et al., 2018)
* Digital footprints: ecologically valid dataset of online human activity consisting of
information shared by users on their social media profiles - e.g., personal information
about age, gender orientation, place of residence, as well shared texts, pictures, and
videos
* Can we predict the Big 5 personality traits based on digital footprints automatically
extracted from social media?
* Content generated and shared on social media user profiles represents an extension of
“one’s self” and reflects the actual personality of its individual users
Social media use (summarized in Azucar et al., 2018)
.
- Extraversion: higher levels of activity on social media and a greater number of friends than
individuals low on the trait - Neuroticism: more prone to self-disclose hidden aspects of themselves, use social media as a
passive way to learn about others, and use more negative words in their posts, or ‘status
updates’ - Agreeableness: use fewer swear words and express positive emotions more frequently in their
posts, more likely to post pictures expressing a positive mood - Conscientiousness: cautious in managing their social media profiles; they tend to post fewer
pictures, express less “Likes”, and engage in less group activity on social media - Openness: tend to have larger networks and “Like” more content found on social media than
individuals low on the trait.
Predicting the big 5 personality traits from digital footprints on social media?
Predicting the big 5 personality traits from digital footprints on social media?
(Azucar et al. (2018)
- typical strength of the relationships between personality and behaviour ranges from 0.30 to 0.40
digital records of behaviours on social media may represent a quire reliable source of information for the prediction of individual personality traits.
Another way to predict: during the pandemic. Diff personalities behaved differently.
For some who is quite neurotic for example it was not an easy period.
Examples: Predictive validity of the Big Five
meta-analytic correlations and heterogeneity statistics for each big 5 traits
openness: point estimate (95% CI): 0.39
conscientiousness: 0.35
extraversionL 0.40
agreeablness: 0.29
neuroticism: 0.33
Hypotheses
* high neuroticism would be associated with more concerns, more precautions to avoid catching the
coronavirus, with more pandemic-related preparatory behaviors and with more pessimistic duration
estimates of pandemic-related issues
* high conscientiousness would be associated with more precautions to avoid catching the coronavirus and
with more pandemic-related preparatory behaviours
* high extraversion would predict more optimistic duration estimates
Methods
* 2066 participants (mean age = 51.42 years; age range = 18–98; 48.5% women; 68.0% White; 15%
African-American; 11.1% His-panic)
* Online Survey between 31st of January and 10th of February: Personality measurements (before the
pandemic)
* Online Survey between 18th and 29th of March: COVID-19 related assessment
Five factor measurement
* 60-item Big Five Inventory-2
* Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism
Statements specifically regarding COVID-19
* 5-point likert-scale
* 13 items for each category: concerns, pre-cautions, preparatory behaviours, and duration estimates
Examples: Predictive validity of the Big Five

Results
* ↑ neuroticism was associated with ↑ concerns and pessimistic
duration estimates but with ↓ precautions and was unrelated
to preparatory behaviours - she said person depressed so disables tht behaviour?
* ↑ conscientiousness was associated with ↑ precautions
* ↑ extraversion was related to ↑ optimistic duration estimates
