L7 Improving Retrieval Flashcards
What is the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve ?
Shows forgetting rates overtime
Quick decrease and then it maintains
What is hypermnesia ?
The idea that memory recall actually improves over time after repeated recall attempts
Forgetting + reminiscence
What are the practical uses for hypermnesia ?
Recall of crime
Memory improves and false alarms do not improve
What are some issues with repeated testing ?
May only improve due to limited recall time
Hypermnesia may be stronger for negatively arousing conditions
Could be the basis of recovery of forgotten emotional memories
False memories more likely
What is Godden and Badly’s research into cue dependant forgetting ?
Recall was highest when in the same environment as encoding (water/beach)
What is Goodwin’s research into state dependant forgetting ?
Alcohol impairs memory when encoded sober
But if learnt drunk, recall is best when drunk
What is mood congruent memory ?
Forcing someone to smile/frown ca change their mood
We tend to recall information that is congruent with our mood
What is the cognitive interview technique ?
Reinstate the context of the event
Recall the scene, feelings etc
Record every detail
Report in different orders
Describe from different viewpoints
Produces more correct results and no difference in number of errors
What is the effect of social influence on retrieval ?
After attitude change, when people are asked what their previous attitude was it changes towards what their attitude is now
Once you know the answer it seems obvious
Hindsight bias
What is the influence of learning on our remembered past abilities ?
Rate skills before a training course
After the course they try to remember their previous skills
Rated themselves to have a lot less skills than they actually did
Want to feel good about taking the course
