L3 - Skeletal Structure Flashcards
Functions of skeleton?
Support, movement, protection, storage, and red blood cell formation.
Compact bone
Dense and tightly packed
Compact bone purpose
Strong, transmits force in one direction
Cancellous bone
Light and spongy
Cancellous bone purpose
To absorb shock and creating channels to resist forces coming from multiple directions.
Long bones
Longer than they are wide, mostly limb bones
Epiphyses
The thicker ends of bones that join at the joints.
Diaphysis
The shaft of the bone, long and thin
Short bones
Equal width and length, mostly cancellous bone
Flat bones
Wide and flat, thin plates of compact bones
Flat bone purpose
For protection and muscle attachment
Irregular bones
Various shapes and functions. The catch all term for other bones
Axial skeleton
Bones of the core (skull, sternum, ribs, vertebral column, sacrum, and coccyx.).
Appendicular skeleton
Bones of limbs
Cranium
Encloses brain, muscle attachments
7 vertebra
Cervical, superior to others
12 vertebra
Thoracic, central, inferior to cervical superior to lumbar
5 vertebra
Lumbar, inferior or to lumbar superior to sacral
Carum
Triangular bone below lumbar vertebrae.
Coccyx
,tailbone’, different from person to person, inferior section of vertebral column
Clavicle
Collarbone, part of pectoral girdles
Scapula
‘Shoulder blade’, part of pectoral girdles
