L26 Flashcards
1
Q
What was the point of molecular phylogency of archaea from soil (purpose, question, hypothesis)
A
purpose: investigate te diversity of soil Archaea
question: are methanogens the only Archaea present in soil
hypothesis: methanogens are not the only Archaea that live in soils
2
Q
What was the experimental approach
A
- isolated clones from uncultured soil Archaea using methods similar to DeLong
- constructed a phylogenetic tree to compare archaeal sequences found in soil to known Archaea
3
Q
What were the results of the Bintrim
A
SCA is soil clone archea
1. there were expected to be methanogens but here were none because not deep enough
- SCA/Group 1 marine was initially classified as a branch of Crenarchaeota but were likely a separate phylum
==>the new phlum was Thaumarch, Nitrosph - shown on phylogenetic tree however it was not detected were two new groups
===>Group 2 marine on same branch as thermoplasma
===>Korarchatoa: 4th archeal phylum
4
Q
What ecological role(s) do Thaumarchaeota/ Nitrososphaerota play in the soil and marine environments
A
