L24 Flashcards
What are the types of somatic senses
-Mechanoreceptors
-Nociceptors
-Chemoreceptors
-Thermoreceptors
What morphological type are sensory neurons
Unipolar
What does Baroreceptors measure
Blood pressure
What does tactile recpetors measure
Pressure, touch, vibration
What do nociceptors detect and are they free or encapsulated nerve endings?
Noxious stimuli, tissue damage, free
What are the 3 types of noxious stimuli nociceptors respond to?
-Thermal
-Mechanical
-chemical
What are receptive fields
-Endings of any single receptor spread over a restricted area
What are phasic receptors
Normally silent, responds to change eg sensation of wearing clothes
Fast adapting
What are tonic receptors
Continually active to reflect background level of stimulation. AP frequency changes when stimulus intensity changes
What are the 4 types of information coding?
Modality, Intensity, Duration, Location MIDL
What is modality information
Type of sensory receptor activated eg
Intensity information
-Stimulus strength encoded by frequency of AP firing in afferent neuron
Duration information
Time period over which the stimulus exists, encoded by time period over which AP are fired in afferent neuron
Location information
Place in body where receptors are activated, mapped in brain (somatosensory cortex)
