CP of Mammary Duct Ectasia
- Acute Inflammation
(less common)
- With pain & fever.
- Usually unnoticed.
CP of Mammary Duct Ectasia
- Small abscess & mammary Fistula
(with anaerobic bacteria) may also
oCcur.
CP of Mammary Duct Ectasia
- Subareolar Hard Mass
- The affected area is hard
- May be associated with skin dimpling and nipple retraction
- Simulating carcinoma
CP of Mammary Duct Ectasia
- Transverse retraction of nipple
may be the only presenting feature.
CP of Mammary Duct Ectasia
- Nipple Discharge
- Cheesy (creamy) toothpaste like, Thick
- Pultaceous.
- Any color
Complications of Mammary Duct Ectasia
- Associated with chronic inflammations.
- May lead to Abscess and mammary duct fistula formation
- Not Premalignant.
INVx for Mammary Duct Ectasia
- Both Breasts Mammography
- Galactography (Ductography) “Dilatation of duct system”
- Biopsy from mass or cytological examination from discharge

- Conservative

- Surgical
Surgical TTT of Mammary Duct Ectasia
- Microdochectomy
- Excision of the involved duct & surrounding inflammatory tissue
- In cases with consistent or recurrent symptoms.
Surgical TTT of Mammary Duct Ectasia
- Total/Major duct excision
Subareolar cone excision (Hodfield’s operation)
May be required for:
- smokers
- patients with recurrent periductal mastitis associated with duct ectasia and duct fistulation
- Nipple Discharge
