L2: Left/right brain and language Flashcards
The Sylvian fissure is steeper in which hemisphere?
Right hemisphere
The Planium temporale is larger in which hemisphere?
Left hemisphere
What 6 areas are language relevant areas in the left hemisphere?
- Broca’s area
- Wernicke’s area
- Auditory cortex
- Angular Gyrus
- Motor cortex
- Arcuate fasciculus
What us the Wernicke-Geschwind model?
Proposes auditory cortex processes sound structure.
Wernicke’s area accesses meaning.
Activation travels to Broca’s area through Arcuate Fasciculus.
Broca’s area accesses speech representation of the world and instructs the motor cortex to execute action
What are symptoms of Broca’s Aphasia?
Slow speech, paraphasic errors, difficulty with production
What are symptoms of Werncike’s Aphasia?
Cannot comprehend speech, produce meaningless speech
What are symptoms of conduction aphasia?
Damage to the Arcuate Fasciculus. Cant repeat heard words.
What is Semantic Paraphasia and Phonemic Paraphasia?
Semantic Paraphasia - Substituting words related in meaning
Phonemic Paraphasia - Substituting a word with a nonword that preserves at least half of the segments in the intended word
What is Telegraphic speech?
Communication consisting of 2-word long sentences, often composed of a noun and verb
What is Agrammatism?
Tendency to form sentences without the correct influential structure
What did Penfield do?
Mapped out brain areas to create a functional map. Brought patient out of anaethesia once skull is opened and prepared.
