L1: The self and The brain Flashcards
Name the 4 lobes of the brain
Occipital, Parietal , Frontal, Temporal
What are the Gyri and Sulci?
Gyri - Folds/bumps in the brain
Sulci - Indentations/grooves
What are the 2 types of connections carried out by the corpus callosum?
Homotopic- between spatially analogous areas across the hemisphere
Heterotopic- connect cells form one area of one hemisphere to another area of the other hemisphere
What is the purpose of the Wada test?
To show tasks cannot be performed if a hemisphere is temporarily anaesthetized
What is a callosotomy?
Procedure that cuts corpus callosum in epilepsy patients
Who performed hemisfield presentation experiments?
Sperry and Gazzinga
What results were found from the block design task?
Split-brain patients couldnt copy design with right hand, the left hand kept trying to intervene so patients had to sit on their left hand
What is known about parkinsons and smiling?
Patients can voluntarily smile but cannot spontaneously react.
What withers away as a result of Parkinsons?
Substantia Nigra, results in a loss of sopamine production
Which hemisphere conducts global analysis and which one conducts detail processing?
Right - global analysis
Left - Detail processing
What are the hemisphere differences in decision making
Right hemisphere - maximising approach
Left hemisphere - looks for rules and patterns, approximates matching
