CULTIVATE // soil, exposed, can do all kinds of things to crops. One day, the farmer had a eureka moment; “I put a muzzle on my dog to make him fall into line… so why not muzzle my soil”. He bound it up tight and, lo and behold, cultivated a killer crop.

SOUND // all our tongues wag, though few do so as well as rappers and MCs. The difference? They stand and deliver, pumping out a proper sound. Sitting MC? No wagging tongue? I think not.

>> Sound // same

DARK // this is negative definition. Sun and Sound. Neither of those are evident in the dark depths of space. But in that dark, dark, place, what else do you think of than light and sound? It’s like a torture…

UNEXPECTEDLY // this one’s truly surprising. The queen, standing in front of her mirror, recieves completely the wrong answer to her question. The mirror actually stands up on human legs, starts wagging its human tongue and declares that it itself is the fairest. Phew.

>> mirror // as the above story

MIRROR // out in the desert, marines haven’t got any mirrors to check their hair. It wouldn’t normally be a problem, but they’ve been in afgan for months and mum just sent a big pot of wax. They decide to use metal mirrors - the bottom of their metal saucepans.

BOUNDARY // In the truman show, a lot of the main walls around his small land were made of mirrors. From afar, they created an invisible yet impassable boundary. It’s actually a trick used by landowners acrross the states now.

BLIND // perished eyes. Now, you could feel sorry for the 40yr old man who went blind. But they did always have a ‘perishable by 2010’ label on the eyes. So he was at least warned.

ABSURD // “the ideal woman”, that one on the front of FHM, with the glint in her eyes. DOES NOT EXIST. she may as well have perished in a blizzard for all you care. It’s absurd that you’re even looking at her, let alone… that.

EXPECT // at the battle of helm’s deep, the king walks among his soldiers and citizens… or, what once were his citizens, whom now are deceased piles of flesh. Naturally, he expects the absolute worst for his people. But expectations don’t always match reality!

Q

A

DIRECTION // long before guns, duels used to involve throwing a dagger at each other from distance. Wind direction was always a contentious issue, so combatants would spin a dagger on their top hats to decide the direction of attack. Direction, after all, is everything.

>> compass // another use for daggers on top hats was as a last-resort compass

Q

A

HINDER // the compass of dagger on top hat is indeed a last resort. Anything can hinder it, even the perfume of a passing woman can reverse its makeshift polarity. A major hinderance, and therefore not to be relied upon.

Q

A

RELEASE // the taskmaster, a rice plantation owner in northern vietnam, ‘releases’ a servant. [Really, they’ve already got too many mouths to feed.] He provides no food or guideance, just a primitive compass. Off you go, released!

17
Q

A

EXCITE // the first scene in the tempest is depicted here. what an exciting opening; a bold taskmaster, white water, a ship unable to follow its compass in the watery mayhem. Excitement as the elements collide.

18
Q

A

SIDE // sidekicks are there not only for support, but all to carry all the stuff necessary for an adventure. A vase for collecting specimins, a crown for making locals obey, and a compass for direction. Having all those things carried at one’s side is great.

19
Q

A

CONVERT // [as in, convert currency] A teenager is the equivalent of the devil in converting cash into useless tut. Look at their little horns as they come sniffing for a tenner to convert into sweeties and MP3 downloads.

>> devil //

20
Q

A

UNDRESS // exposing one’s flesh in public brings out the devil in onlookers, especially stuck up ones. Imagine the conductor mooning a Proms crowd. They’d all turn devilish with rage at his undressed flesh.

21
Q

A

SPEAK // “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me” said the little girl under her breath, but the bully was speaking words of the devil himself. They hurt, quite literally, like hell!

22
Q

A

FORMERLY // Those who formerly held office, often have devil brains and wagging tongues. Think of Tony Blair, formerly prime minister, now unable to keep his mouth shut. His devilish brain and big mouth was formerly in charge, but its still a nuisance now.

>> increase // Blair Bunnies are everywhere! They’re increasing by the hour.

23
Q

A

INCREASE // Soil increases, piling up and up and up. Remember that the R part of the character is a little bunny blair infestation, now at least covered in soil for the time being.

24
Q

A

TO MAKE A PRESENT OF // Colonialists, arriving in the promised land, offered locals a very very shiny shell. The return they saw for this tiny ‘investment’ saw an annual increase of 1000%! This is a false kind of present, a disguised investment.
