L19 - Muzzle compensate Flashcards
>> 咅
>> MUZZLE // muzzles are normally used on horses and dogs. But this is a high class case, a well-trained lady whose mouth is out of control with chatter. The only thing to hand is a vase, making a makeshift muzzle to shut her up.
赔
COMPENSATE // the fisherman’s widow is whining to the captain, she wants compensation. “£10,000 for a drowning, that’s what gladys got”. The captain finds a use for his freshly caught clams - as a muzzle.
培
CULTIVATE // soil, exposed, can do all kinds of things to crops. One day, the farmer had a eureka moment; “I put a muzzle on my dog to make him fall into line… so why not muzzle my soil”. He bound it up tight and, lo and behold, cultivated a killer crop.
音
SOUND // all our tongues wag, though few do so as well as rappers and MCs. The difference? They stand and deliver, pumping out a proper sound. Sitting MC? No wagging tongue? I think not.
>> Sound // same
暗
DARK // this is negative definition. Sun and Sound. Neither of those are evident in the dark depths of space. But in that dark, dark, place, what else do you think of than light and sound? It’s like a torture…
韵
RHYME // Uniformity of sounds. Striped school uniform is a handy reminder of the rhyme scheme: A B A B C D C D.
竟
UNEXPECTEDLY // this one’s truly surprising. The queen, standing in front of her mirror, recieves completely the wrong answer to her question. The mirror actually stands up on human legs, starts wagging its human tongue and declares that it itself is the fairest. Phew.
>> mirror // as the above story
镜
MIRROR // out in the desert, marines haven’t got any mirrors to check their hair. It wouldn’t normally be a problem, but they’ve been in afgan for months and mum just sent a big pot of wax. They decide to use metal mirrors - the bottom of their metal saucepans.
境
BOUNDARY // In the truman show, a lot of the main walls around his small land were made of mirrors. From afar, they created an invisible yet impassable boundary. It’s actually a trick used by landowners acrross the states now.
亡
DECEASED // It’s wrong to eradicate all trace of the deceased. So it was decided that the chairman’s top hat be left on a hook in the office after his death.
>> perish //
盲
BLIND // perished eyes. Now, you could feel sorry for the 40yr old man who went blind. But they did always have a ‘perishable by 2010’ label on the eyes. So he was at least warned.
妄
ABSURD // “the ideal woman”, that one on the front of FHM, with the glint in her eyes. DOES NOT EXIST. she may as well have perished in a blizzard for all you care. It’s absurd that you’re even looking at her, let alone… that.
望
EXPECT // at the battle of helm’s deep, the king walks among his soldiers and citizens… or, what once were his citizens, whom now are deceased piles of flesh. Naturally, he expects the absolute worst for his people. But expectations don’t always match reality!
方
DIRECTION // long before guns, duels used to involve throwing a dagger at each other from distance. Wind direction was always a contentious issue, so combatants would spin a dagger on their top hats to decide the direction of attack. Direction, after all, is everything.
>> compass // another use for daggers on top hats was as a last-resort compass
妨
HINDER // the compass of dagger on top hat is indeed a last resort. Anything can hinder it, even the perfume of a passing woman can reverse its makeshift polarity. A major hinderance, and therefore not to be relied upon.
